Relevant Applications
Swagelok is in a unique position to support Naval projects on a global scale. Locally, we service the U.S. Navy third fleet and have had detailed involvement with the USNS Mercy. There are several key areas where we can commonly provide support:
Hydraulic actuation systems
Cleanliness and is essential to proper operation of these systems involving steering, aircraft elevators, propeller systems and damage control valves. O.D. tubing and Mechanically Attached Fittings (MAF) have been used for applications up to 1" O.D.
Air (compressed) systems
Design for high pressure air and cleanliness for these systems involving gas pressure and diesel engines, pneumatic hoists and control air for regulating valves. Copper-nickel alloy tubing and Monel fittings are available for uses like these.
Lube oil systems
Crucial to a ship's propulsion, the pressures and temperatures involved are within range of current Swagelok products, in most cases.
Potable water systems
Post-installation cleanliness is vital to provide consumable water using brazing/ welding and flushing processes. Swagelok MAF are available for these uses, as well as sizes up to 1" O.D. in Monel grip type fittings, along with class 200 70-30 copper nickel alloy tubing.
Chill and Sea Water Piping
Submersible and diving applications
Including the Deep Rover submersible, hyperbaric chamber technology and tube bending assemblies used on ROVs to clean tankers and large boats.
Products to Consider
A note on piping versus tubing:
Many applications depend on fluid delivery sent through piping systems. Unfortunately, cutting, welding and threading hard pipe is not a quick process. It is slow and labor intensive. A better alternative may be stainless steel tubing. Stainless steel tubing, instead of hard pipe, can greatly simplify installation and maintenance. Rather than hard turns with connectors, tubing can be bent to shape, reducing cost and potential leakage points.

Swagelok two-ferrule fittings and VCR weld fittings include performance and installation advantages that are ideal for seawater applications and corrosive environments.
Swagelok VB03 and VB04 Double Block and Bleed Valves
Swagelok VB03 and VB04 Double Block and Bleed provide reliable two valve isolation (a safety requirement) allowing maintenance of systems and equipment, leading to improved operational up time. Ships operators and maintenance personnel are experiencing improved system efficiency due to tighter zoning and more reliable safety shut off.
Tubing
Swagelok can convert the vessels from pipe to tubing, helping to achieve savings over welded pipe, as well as performance improvements.
Tubing assemblies we've previously converted do not have the same leakage potential as pipe, requires less rework and is easier to install. Also, tubing is 4 X faster to install than the previously used pipe. This means greater efficiency and reduced labor costs.
