For applications that are subject to vibration, tubing is subject to rotary flex stress that can lead to failure. Often removing the source of vibration is not viable, but that doesn't mean it has to dramatically reduce the life of the application. There are other choices that can be made to help mitigate the effects.

First, for many applications hose can be an option. Its inherent flexibility makes it ideal for vibration situations. To find out more about using hose, read our post Tubing vs. Pipe.

But hoses cannot always be substituted in.  If tubing is a requirement, more information about Rotary Flex Vibration protection can be found in this video or by reading the highlights below.

Butt weld fittings are considered the industry gold standard for vibration protection, but there is another option that reaches the same quality level based on millions of cycles of testing: The standard Swagelok tube fitting.

The design of the Swagelok tube fitting helps prevent tube fracturing. The hinging and colleting back ferrule create a colleting region. The tube fitting therefore protects the stress riser and supports the tubing in that colleting region.

What this means is that fractures, should they occur at all, occur in away from a compromised area of the tubing, thus greatly extending tube life.

When a tube fitting is used that doesn't produce a colleting region, they do not survive well during rotary flex vibration testing, since no vibration protection is provided.

Safe Product Selection
The complete catalog contents must be reviewed to ensure that the system designer and user make a safe product selection. When selecting products, the total system design must be considered to ensure safe, trouble-free performance. Function, material compatibility, adequate ratings, proper installation, operation, and maintenance are the responsibilities of the system designer and user.
